"The little trick of getting three objects to dance around in your hands has always managed to keep a small sense of magic...It's one form of insanity we feel everyone has a right to experience."

Poi Workshops: with Claire de Luxe
Posted May 22, 2009

Note: Posted as received. We don't know what happened to Poi 3 either.

Spring and summer poi sessions starting in May! Poi 1, Poi 2, and Poi 4 will be 10-week sessions, each culminating with a fire performance. There is also a new class, Freestyle Workshop, which will be available on a drop-in basis.

Poi was an ancient Maori art used for dance, play, agility, and self-defense training. Today, poi has developed into a dynamic and complex art form that is often combined with fire. Here, poi is taught with an eye for movement as opposed to simply a series of static tricks to be mastered. Class includes warm-up and cool-down as well as plenty of opportunity for questions, improvisation, and experimentation. We will spin and move to a variety of music to encourage different styles and flow. We introduce and review basic fire safety methods, and the last class always includes the opportunity to light up (no fire will take place at Triskelion studios).

Poi 1
Mondays, 8:00–9:30pm
Dates: May 18, May 25, June 1, June 29, July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27, Aug 3, Aug 10
This class starts at the very beginning! We begin building a basic vocabulary and getting comfortable spinning, moving, and working with planes, stalls, and basic transitions.

Poi 2
Tuesdays, 8:00–9:30pm
Dates: May 19, May 26, June 2, June 20, July 7, July 14, July 21, July 28, Aug 4, Aug 11
Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of simple poi moves. We continue adding to our poi vocabulary, building transitions, and facilitating experimentation.

Poi 4
Tuesdays, 6:30–8:00pm
Dates: May 19, May 26, June 2, June 20, July 7, July 14, July 21, July 28, Aug 4, Aug 11
Students should understand the mechanics of poi movements, be able to pick up new tricks with relative ease, and feel comfortable spinning freeform. In this class we will be exploring more technical elements of poi moves (antispin, hyperloops, pendulums, polyrhythms) as well as refining our form and working on performance styles.

Freestyle Workshop
Mondays, 6:30–8:00pm
Dates: May 18, May 25, June 1, June 29, July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27, Aug 3, Aug 10
This class is an opportunity for students to work on their own personal poi practice in a dedicated and supported environment. Students are encouraged to use this time to develop routines, work through tricky spots, or just work up a sweat. Instruction will not be in the form of a specific curriculum; rather, I will be available to help with questions, ideas, and troubleshooting. This will be an open source workshop and sharing and exchanging ideas is encouraged. This is also an ideal opportunity to take advantage of the mirrored studio, which can be an invaluable tool. This is an open level class, however, you must have some basic knowledge of poi as there will be no breakdown of moves per se.

New policy! Missed classes may be made up by attending any Freestyle Workshop (during this spring/summer session).

Enrollment:
Poi 1, 2, and 4 are $180 for the 10-week session.
Freestyle Workshop is $16 for a single class.
Class cards may be purchased at a reduced rate: 5 classes for $70 or 10 classes for $120.

About the Instructor:
"Claire Smith's poi teaching is nothing less than awesome. She's got a great knack for breaking down complicated moves so they're easily understandable, and she gets the sense of play that poi is all about. Her classes are a blast."
-Nancy Connors

Claire is an EXCELLENT poi teacher. I was trying to teach myself by video and through friends and wasn't getting very far, but once I started taking her classes, my skills took off. Claire has a really clear way of explaining what should be happening with each move and can see right away why a trick isn't working. She works well with students of all levels. The mirrored studio also helps self-immensely. Claire is considerate and fun and I always look forward to classes.
-Crystal Thiele
