"The little trick of getting three objects to dance around in your hands has always managed to keep a small sense of magic...It's one form of insanity we feel everyone has a right to experience."

TRAINING
Poi Classes Beginner to Advanced Mar 3-May 13
Posted February 20, 2015
Learn a ground act, or just flow inside this beautiful and meditative art form, with NYC's longest running flow arts teacher!

Poi 1
Yay, you’re learning poi! We start with the very basics, introducing concepts, drills, and groundwork to help your body learn how to learn poi. We also cover safety training so that you’re prepared to light your poi for the first time at the end of the session!

Poi 3
We will continue to work on developing reels in all categories of timing and direction to make sure we can fluidly take the poi around the body in any variation. We will develop our stalls more, using them to to move between timing and direction families, as well as looking at turns in every pattern.

Poi 4
We will make sure that we have all variations of reels and fluidity with moving around the body, turns, and t&d, and then begin looking at flowers and other patterns that open up the poi from the body a bit more.

Poi 6
We’ll be starting to look at zero point stalls, anti-spin, and other concepts while continuing to develop more flower variations and fluidity with what we already know.

Ninja X Poi
More fun tricks, concepts, and combos for this open-level class. Appropriate for intermediate/advanced spinners who pick up new moves with relative ease.

Claire de Luxe
"Claire is one of the best teachers I have had the pleasure to study with. Her instructions are clear and her easygoing manner makes even the most complicated moves feel very accessible. After two years of poi classes I am still impressed with the absolute presence and focus Claire maintains with each and every student. Poi has been an exploration in movement and balance and has helped me find fluidity and grace. I am continuously fascinated with how the work of trying to coordinate movements of the body also affects my brain and clarity of thought. I feel that my weekly poi sessions have actually helped me with my studies at school as well as provide a bit of meditation like therapy for my mind. I am committed to my poi classes, and maybe even a little addicted."
–Tania Turcinovic, nursing student

"I’ve been taking Claire’s poi classes for the past 3 years. I started as a beginner and am now an accomplished spinner! Claire is a wonderful teacher. She is able to break down the moves in a concise and understandable way while being patient and supportive. She gets just as excited as her students when we master a move! She encourages us to tap into our creativity while acquiring technique. The class is casual and diverse and everyone is inspired to work hard. As an older former dancer, spinning poi allows me to be creative with movement & gets my motor skills and coordination tuned with the same discipline of dance. It takes a lot of commitment and practice to master. And it’s fun!"
–Faye Honor, VP Design, Image Terrain & certified Pilates instructor

"I’d love to give Claire all the stars in the universe on a scale of 1-10. I always leave class feeling physically vibrant & excited to work on stuff during the week. Claire is a super chill teacher who makes everything seem achievable. I can’t wait for the next session to start because this is an art I really want to learn more about, and improve. I feel Poi is one of those things that once you stop over-analyzing it and just do it, you fall into that good head space of meditation that happens when you do any art, and I love going to those head spaces."
