  CircEsteem Paid Internship (Chicago)

Note: CirEsteem is a wonderful program. This would be a great entry-level position for someone seeking to enter circus arts education. Posted as received.

Chicago Interviews: January 23, 2009 5-8pm and January 24, 2009 4-6pm.
Be prepared to demonstrate coaching ability and teach a skill or lead an activity to a group of students and adults.

If interviewing from outside Chicago: please submit a 3-5 minute video that includes a creative introduction and showcases circus, teaching, and speaking skills. Maribeth Joy will be conducting interviews by phone.

Requirements (please highlight in resume):
  • Have a strong desire to work with youth in circus skills and performance in addition to being a part of CircEsteem's tutoring program
  • Be available and flexible to rehearse and perform with the CircEnsemble
  • Be responsible, punctual, committed, reliable, and conscientious
  • Be available all dates of internship
  • Be at least 18 years of age and able to pass a background check and drug test
Internship Details:
  • 120-150 hour internship over 6 weeks from January 31-March 14, 2009
  • Interns will receive beginning training in circus arts and performance experiences including ongoing hands-on training in gym wheel, acrobatics, juggling, clown, tight wire, and other basic circus skills
  • Interns will work with such renowned circus teachers and performers as world champion Gym Wheel performer Wolfgang Bientzle and CircEsteem's Founder & Chief Goof-Officer and former Ringling Bros. clown, Paul Miller
  • Looking for 4-5 interns with the potential to become Ensemble Apprentices for an additional 6 months immediately following the internship, potential for full-time employment following the six-month apprenticeship
  • Interns will gain experience teaching students during CircEsteem programming
  • Stipend of $500, paid in halves after third and sixth weeks
  • Limited, affordable, short-term housing is available if necessary

Apprenticeship Description IF HIRED AFTER INTERNSHIP:
  • Upon completion of internship there will be an audition for a position as a CircEnsemble Apprentice.
  • Apprentices will join the CircEnsemble to team teach and help with Saturday morning programming, after school programming, HomeWork & CircusWork, and offsite gigs.
  • Because some gigs are offsite, apprentices must have a current drivers license and must be prepared to pass a road test before they are allowed to drive youth to gigs.
  • Apprentices will be paid $10-12 an hour.
  • Apprentices will partner with Ensemble members and to serve as the teaching staff for programming both on and off site.
  • Apprentices will have opportunities to perform and travel with the CircEnsemble and CircEsteem.
  • The CircEnsemble and the EsteemTeam (CircEsteem's advanced youth performers) will provide input during the final hiring process so that the Apprentices are assessed on their work within the existing CircEsteem family.
  • Ensemble members are paid $12-30 an hour depending on skill level and experience.
