VISITORS POLICY: After 25 years of
admitting visiting jugglers, the gym, now under new management, has stopped letting anyone juggle without buying a membership ($75/year; $37.50/half-year). We are not happy about this but have no control over it. If you will be in NYC a while, please buy a membership. It's worth it. If you are just passing through and would like to visit the gym to juggle with us, please plea your case directly to the Rec. Center, (212) 242-5228, or better yet, plea your case directly to the NYC Parks & Recreation Commissioner to help us improve the situation for everybody. ___________________________________________________
New York City's juggling community has centered around the Carmine Street Gym (now the Tony Dapolito Rec Center) for two decades. Before that, the city's jugglers practiced together at Brian Dube's loft space on Park Place, at New York University, and elsewhere throughout the city until in 1984, Bill Wachpress asked the management of the Carmine Street Gym, where he played volleyball, whether they would open one night a week for juggling. Since then, the group has evolved into an eclectic and revolving bunch, averaging 20 - 30 participants each week and regularly drawing twice that. All levels of expertise are represented from the three-bag novices to five-club experts on slack rope. It's quite dazzling to experience for the first time.
The Carmine Street Jugglers meet every Thursday from 7:30 - 10:00 pm at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center (formerly the Carmine Street Gym), which is a public facility run by the New York City Parks and Recreation Department. The gym is located on the northwest corner of Clarkson Street and 7th Avenue South in Manhattan.
The juggling club does not charge any fees; however NYC Department of Parks & Recreation annual gym membership fees apply for gym access: $75/year for adults, $10/year for seniors (55 and up), and free for youth (18 and under). Gym membership includes access to the pools, fitness rooms, and other services in most city gyms.
Please wear or bring gym clothes and rubber-soled shoes. Locker rooms are available; bring your own lock.
